Course set for Barcelona: Beyond Blue’s ESMO 2024 preview is here

Tackling Health Inequalities

The EPHMRA Basel One-Day Meeting on September 19th is investigating the Impact of Health Inequality; giving us an opportunity to explore bias, diversity, and health equity, across the pharmaceutical industry.

Attending from Beyond Blue is Paula Coyle, and here are her ‘top picks’ for the day and what she hopes to bring back (aside from Swiss chocolates for the Beyond Blue team!).

Key Themes and Papers

Tackling Healthcare Bias and Achieving Diversity

Our day will kick off with Hafsah Rana and Sandra Flierl (IQVIA) presenting “The Inevitability of Bias; The Challenge of Achieving Diversity.”  As a behaviour scientist I’m keen to hear about the biases at play and their impact on healthcare delivery, setting us up for more in-depth discussions later in the day.

Ethnic Disparities in Treatment

As head of oncology, I’m also looking forward to a case study on Multiple Myeloma (MM). Siegfried Ertl and Manuel Guzman Martin (APLUSA) will explore how ethnic disparities affect treatment outcomes in their paper “Ethnic Disparities in Multiple Myeloma Treatment: A Holistic Analysis from Real-World Data.” I’m keen to learn more about the perceptions vs. lived realities of ethnic disparities in MM, as we often see in research that emotional and personal perceptions can override recall of real-life experiences, facts, and figures.

Closing Health Equity in Asthma

The other presentation I’m really looking forward to is to hear some of the solutions proposed by Lucy Oates (Narrative Health) who is presenting a case study on asthma to illustrate how disparities in health inequality can addressed.

We wrap up the day with the Novartis ART tour, an inspiring end to an inspiring day!

Stay tuned for our recap, where we’ll delve into the key takeaways and how they can help you tackle complex challenges with the clarity you need.
